The Audi RS3 Story — The History Of A Five-Cylinder Icon
Every so often a car comes along that earns a genuine cult following, and the Audi RS3 is exactly that. As an Audi enthusiast and a member of Audi Club Sydney, I have photographed plenty of them and even driven a few. So I can tell you first-hand that this little pocket rocket is something truly special. In this post, I want to tell the full Audi RS3 story from start to finish — the history, the various models, and why this five-cylinder legend has become one of the most beloved performance cars of its generation.
Where The Audi RS3 Story Begins
To understand the Audi RS3 story, you first have to understand the engine at its heart. Audi has been building five-cylinder engines for a very long time. In fact, the lineage dates all the way back to the 1976 Audi 100. That offbeat, warbling five-cylinder soundtrack quickly became part of Audi’s identity, both on the road and on the rally stages of the 1980s.
Fast forward to 2011, and Audi unveiled the very first RS3 at the Geneva Motor Show. Finally, enthusiasts got a proper taste of Audi Sport’s performance magic in a compact hatchback package. It was fast, it was practical, and it sounded like nothing else in its class.
The First Generation (2011–2012)
The first RS3, known internally as the 8P, arrived with a turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine producing 335 horsepower. Furthermore, Audi paired it with their legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive system. As a result, the RS3 delivered incredible grip and blistering acceleration in all conditions.
Critics loved it immediately. Because it combined everyday usability with genuine supercar-baiting pace, the RS3 quickly earned a place among the performance elite. However, it was only ever offered as a Sportback hatchback in this first generation, and it was produced in relatively limited numbers.
The Second Generation (2015–2020)
Next came the second generation, based on the 8V platform. Audi took everything that made the original great and turned it up a notch. The revised 2.5-litre engine now produced 362 horsepower, and later versions pushed even higher. As a result, the RS3 could sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just over four seconds.
This generation was also significant for another reason. For the first time, Audi introduced an RS3 Sedan alongside the Sportback. So buyers who wanted the performance in a more traditional four-door body finally had the option. Furthermore, the styling became more aggressive, the interior more premium, and the technology more advanced. In short, the RS3 was maturing into a seriously complete performance car.
The Third Generation (2021–Present)
Then came the current generation, based on the 8Y platform, and this is where things got really exciting. Audi extracted 400 horsepower from the same beloved five-cylinder engine, making it the most powerful production compact car in its class. As a result, it became a genuine giant-killer, capable of embarrassing far more expensive machinery.
The real party trick, though, was the introduction of the RS Torque Splitter. Because this clever rear differential can send power to individual rear wheels, the RS3 gained a playful, adjustable character that earlier versions simply did not have. It even has a drift mode. Furthermore, the digital Virtual Cockpit, adaptive suspension, and aggressive new styling made this the most complete RS3 yet.
Why Enthusiasts Love The RS3
So what is it about the RS3 that inspires such devotion? For me, it comes down to a few things. First, the performance is genuinely staggering for such a compact and practical car. Second, that five-cylinder engine sounds absolutely incredible — and with a few modifications, it sounds even better. In fact, a modified RS3 with an upgraded exhaust is one of the best-sounding cars you will ever hear.
Because the engine responds so well to tuning, the RS3 has also developed a huge and passionate aftermarket following. As a result, no two modified RS3s are ever quite the same, which makes them an absolute joy to photograph at club meets and events.
The End Of An Era Is Approaching
Here is the bittersweet part of the Audi RS3 story. Because of tougher Euro 7 emissions regulations, Audi will retire the RS3 and its iconic five-cylinder engine from the European market by mid-2027. For enthusiasts, that news landed like a real gut punch, since that offbeat warble has been Audi’s performance soundtrack for decades.
To mark the occasion, Audi is sending the European RS3 off in style. The RS3 Competition Limited is a 750-unit special edition that celebrates 50 years of five-cylinder engines. It features exclusive Malachite Green paint inspired by the legendary Sport Quattro, gold-painted wheels, upgraded coilover suspension, and a serial number for each of the 750 cars built.
Good News For Australian Buyers
Now for the good news. Despite all the talk of the RS3’s demise, the car is not disappearing entirely. Because emissions regulations differ around the world, Audi will keep producing the RS3 for markets outside Europe. So Australian buyers will continue to have access to the RS3 well into 2028 and beyond.
In fact, Audi’s own performance division has firmly pushed back on reports that the five-cylinder is being killed off completely, describing that speculation as unfounded. As long as the current A3 platform continues, the five-cylinder RS3 will live on. So if you have ever dreamed of owning one, the door is still very much open here in Australia.
A Modern Classic In The Making
When you look back over the Audi RS3 story, it is easy to see why this car has earned its legendary status. Because the five-cylinder engine is now living on borrowed time, these cars are only going to become more desirable as the years go by. In my opinion, the RS3 is a modern classic in the making.
